A guide to wheel alignment
Wheel alignment is a key maintenance job. Properly aligned wheels are parallel to each other and square to the road, which helps tyres last longer, improves fuel efficiency and makes the car safer and better to handle.
What a technician checks
Three angles matter when checking alignment:
- Toe
- The angle the tyres point inwards or outwards, seen from above. Toe-in means the fronts of the tyres are closer together than the rears. Toe-out means they are further apart.
- Caster
- The angle seen from the side of the vehicle. Positive caster tilts the steering axis towards the rear, negative towards the front. It influences stability and steering feel.
- Camber
- The angle seen from the front of the vehicle. Positive camber means the top of the tyre tilts outwards, negative means it tilts inwards.

Signs your wheels need checking
- Uneven tyre wear. The inside or outside edges are wearing faster.
- A big pothole or kerb. A hard knock can push the wheels out of line.
- The car pulls to one side on a straight road.
- The steering wheel is off-centre when you drive in a straight line.
- Vibration especially at higher speeds.
