Premium or budget tyres: which should you buy?
When you buy new tyres, the choice runs from low-cost budget tyres to high-end premium ones. The right answer depends on how, and how far, you drive.
Budget tyres
Budget tyres cost much less than premium tyres, and they are made to a set standard and are safe. But everyone drives differently. Some drivers only go locally from A to B, others cover long distances. The cheapest tyre is not always the most economical: budget tyres usually do not perform to the same level as premium tyres, which can mean replacing them more often and paying more in the long run.

Premium tyres
You will recognise brands like Continental, Goodyear and Michelin. Some have been making tyres for over 100 years and are trusted by millions of drivers worldwide. Premium tyres are made to a very high standard and tested with the latest technology, so you know you are getting a quality product that is safe and economical.

Three differences that matter
- Technology
- Premium brands invest heavily every year in research and innovation. High silica compounds are often used for maximum grip and safety, and prototypes are tested in real conditions. Many premium brands also make run flat tyres, which let you drive on for up to 50 miles after a puncture: Bridgestone Driveguard, Continental ContiSeal, Michelin Zero Pressure and Pirelli Seal Inside.
- Performance
- Budget makers tend to build to a price point, while premium makers build the best tyre their technology allows, tested in the markets where it will be used. Savings on a budget tyre can be lost to lower fuel economy or fewer miles over the life of the tyre.
- Safety
- Premium tyres usually have tread designs tuned for wet grip, which helps shorten braking distances. On the tyre label, wet grip is graded from A (best) down, and each grade is worth roughly 3 metres of braking distance at 50mph. Check the label before you buy.
