How long a battery lasts
A car battery lasts around 3 to 5 years. Most cars have a single maintenance-free 12 volt battery that loses capacity over time, particularly in cold weather. Dim or flickering dashboard lights and a slow-turning engine are the usual signs of a weak one.
Short journeys, a fault that drains the battery, or not driving enough to charge it can all shorten its life.
